A Beginner’s Guide to the Different Types of Bikes

In 2020, the cycling industry generated an unprecedented amount of revenue, with sales reaching over one billion dollars in March. Last year, the most popular types of bikes were those suitable for family use and riding around the neighborhood. Yet, there are many other styles on the market, and each type of bike has unique features and uses.

If you’re just getting into cycling, you may be unsure of how to choose a bike. This post will walk you through the different types of bikes and share some bike buying tips.

Cruiser bicycles are easy to ride at low to moderate speeds, with a large steel frame, wide-set tires, and curved handlebars. These features encourage an upright posture and allow the rider to customize their cruiser with accessories such as:

  • Saddlebags
  • Fenders
  • Lights
  • Baskets

If you’re looking for a bike to ride casually around town, a cruiser is for you!

Road Bike

Road bikes are great choices for riding fast on paved surfaces. They have drop handlebars, skinny tires and are lightweight, making them the perfect choice for on-road racing.

Unfortunately, many people find road bikes uncomfortable on unpaved terrains, so this isn’t the best choice if you plan to hit the trails. Nevertheless, it is an excellent option if you want to get into competitive cycling or triathlons.

Mountain Bike

Mountain bikes have heavy frames and wheels, disc brakes, and a wide range of gears. These features make mountain bikes the perfect bicycle for riding off-road, whether on desert paths, in the woods, or on mountainsides.

While you can use them to ride on pavement, they are heavier and slower than other bikes. So, you may want to choose another style if commuting is your primary reason for purchasing a bike.

Nevertheless, if you plan on getting a mountain bike, keep in mind that you should get extra suspension on the front if you plan on riding in rocky areas.

Hybrid Bikes

Hybrid bikes combine the speed of a road bike with comfort, so they are a perfect choice for those who want to commute to work on their bicycle.

Instead of drop handlebars, hybrid bikes have flat or extended style handlebars that make the bike much easier to control. They also have wider wheels and disc brakes that allow commuters to stop quickly on busy streets.

Folding Bikes

Folding bikes are a good choice for commuters without space to store their bike at home. They can easily collapse to one-third their full size, fitting under a bed or in a cabinet. While they aren’t the best choice for hilly or inclined terrain, they do well in most cities with flat roads.

Understanding the Different Types of Bikes

After considering the most common types of bikes, you are better prepared to purchase your next bicycle! Remember to try out different styles and models before making your final decision, as this will increase your satisfaction with your purchase and ensure that your bike is just what you wanted!
