What One Should Know About Car Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issues a recall when something goes wrong with a vehicle that affects performance and safety. The NHTSA issues recall for various car-related items, including seat belts, equipment, wheels, and more. While the NHTSA is the primary source of recall information, most manufacturers gladly submit recalls if they discover a flaw in their car. Recalls can also be divided into two categories: safety-related and non-safety-related.

A safety-related flaw is a problem that endangers the passengers inside. It may include issues such as:

  • Sticky gasoline or brake systems
  • Steering component failure
  • Faulty airbags
  • Wiring issues
  • The windshield wipers are not working.

Non-safety recalls are frequently cosmetic faults, ones that do not affect safety but show flaws in the production process, such as:

  • Paint of poor quality
  • Body panels with gaps
  • Rust
  • Faulty audio, conditioning systems, or heating
